Today any decorative patterned grille or cutout (patterned after the Roman lattice) between railings are referred to as balusters. Balusters as architectural details are found in homes, mansions, and public buildings, inside and outside. The Baluster Shape: Balustrade (pronounced BAL-us-trade) has come to mean any series of vertical bracings between rails, including spindles and simple posts. The word itself reveals a certain design intention. Baluster is really a shape, coming from the Greek and Latin words for a wild pomegranate flower. Pomegranates are ancient fruits indigenous to the Mediterranean, Middle East, India, and Asia, which is why you find the baluster shape in these areas of the world. Having hundreds of seeds, pomegranates also have long been symbols of fertility, so when ancient civilizations decorated their architecture with objects from nature (e.g., the top of a Corinthian column is decorated with acanthus leaves), the shapely baluster was a good decorative choice. What we call the baluster shape was depicted in pottery and jugs and wall carving in many parts of the world from the earliest civilizations—the potters wheel was invented around 3,500 BC, so wheel-turned shapely water jugs and baluster vases were more easily produced—but the baluster was not used in architecture until thousands of years later, during the Renaissance. After the Middle Ages, from roughly 1300 until 1600, a new interest in Classical design was reborn, including the baluster design. Architects like Vignola, Michelangelo, and Palladio incorporated the baluster design into Renaissance architecture, and today balusters and balustrades are considered the architectural detail itself. In fact, our common word banister is a corruption or mispronunciation of baluster. Preservation of Balustrades: Exterior balustrades are obviously more susceptible to decay and deterioration than interior balustrades. Proper design, manufacturing, installation, and regular maintenance are keys to their preservation. The US General Services Administration (GSA) defines balustrade by its components, consisting of the handrail, footrail and balusters. The handrail and footrail are joined at the ends to a column or post.   The balusters are vertical members that connect the rails. Wooden balustrades are subject to deterioration for a number of reasons, including exposed end grain from the manufacturing process and butt joints that are prone to moisture. Regular inspection and maintenance of a well-designed balustrade are the keys to continued care and preservation. A wooden balustrade in proper condition is rigid and free from decay, the GSA reminds us. It is designed with sloping surfaces to repel water and has properly caulked, tight joints. Exterior cast stone (i.e., concrete) balusters will have moisture problems if not designed and installed properly and if not routinely inspected. Balusters come in many shapes and sizes, and the quality of construction and thickness of the balusters neck may affect its integrity. The variables involved in manufacture are considerable, and it is wise to use a firm with experience in ornamental and custom work rather than a precast concrete firm which manufactures stock structural items, suggests preservationist Richard Pieper. The Case for Preservation: So, why preserve balustrades in public buildings or on your own home? Why not just cover them up, encase them in metal or plastic and protect them from environmental hazards? Balustrades and railings are not only practical and safety features, write preservationist John Leeke and architectural historian Aleca Sullivan, they typically are highly visible decorative elements. Unfortunately, balustrades and balusters are frequently altered, covered, removed or completely replaced even though in most cases they can be repaired in a cost-effective manner. Routine cleaning, patching, and painting will preserve all kinds of balustrades. Replacement should be a last resort only. To preserve historic fabric, the repair of old balustrades and railings is always the preferred approach, Leeke and Sullivan remind us. A broken baluster usually is one in need of repair, not replacement. First I will attempt to look at it from a secular nonpartisan standpoint. I believe that it is not moral, but without my religious background I would have a hard time putting my finger on exactly why. I will attempt that now. The first argument I will look at is fairly conservative, it is simply put that fetuses are human beings and it is wrong to kill human beings. Now on the surface this argument looks unbeatable, if you believe that fetuses are in fact humans. In what ways are they human? Their DNA is that of a human but dead peoples DNA is human too. Do they have souls (obviously if you are trying to determine the morality of abortion you must believe that humans have souls or wouldnt it just be the same as slapping aside a pesky fly), and if they do have souls do they have them from conception or are they conferred upon the unborn sometime during pregnancy or even at first breath? Or do we rate human life on their potential? Is it immoral to abort a baby simply because they may become the next President of the United States, or cure cancer, or bring about world peace, or take part in some other lofty accomplishment? But then again is it any more wrong to destroy a stone that will become a sculpture then one that will just sit around being a stone. So many more questions are raised then are answered by this argument. What about the consent argument. Seems simple enough, through the act of intercourse a women waves the right of the use of her uterus. Again seems simple enough, its like waving a no-trade clause in your contract. But look at it from the other direction; does getting in a car and driving down the road wave your rights in favor of those of a drunk driver? That throws an unexpected kink into that argument. Does knowing the risks of pregnancy guard make you responsible for what those risks entail? How about an argument against abortion, the one that states that because a fetus is a part of a womens body she has the sole right over what is done to it. To me it seems like the male portion of the relationship should have some say in whether the pregnancy be terminated, he did have equal part in bringing it around. In every argument listed there are pros and cons both ways, all of which seem plausible. But when you think about it almost every conclusion drawn is based on another unrelated allusion: fetuses to dead bodies; the potential of human life to that of a rock; or the risks of pregnancy to those of driving. For instance if you were to tell me that homosexuality was morally okay I could counter by telling y ou that putting two male ends of hose together wont make the hose work and BAM Ive got a counter argument that would make a philosopher proud. The problem is that everything in life is an exception to something else, so when connections are drawn between two things of unequal importance it is easy to distort reality. Looking at these verses I see two things, design and purpose. Every baby is skillfully wrought by God, not something Id want to mess with, and also they each hav e a purpose set out before them by an infinite being which is also something Id rather not mess up. I liked how he expressed how they put the movie together and how he never thought they would be standing there receiving an Oscar because it just shows that it doesn’t take a lot to achieve your dreams. The only thing I wish he would have done was name the people he wanted to thank instead of generalizing it because then it doesn’t seem personal. The next speech I watched was â€Å"Tom Hanks winning an Oscar for â€Å"Forrest Gump†Ã¢â‚¬ . I loved how Tom Hanks acknowledged the other nominees and said that the others deserved the award as much as he did. I thought that was sincere and respectful of the others who were nominated for the Oscar. I liked the way he acknowledged those who were a part of making the film and what he said was very meaningful and you could tell it meant a lot to him because of the emotional appeal he gave off. It just showed how much he enjoyed working with the other actors in making the film and how it impacted his life and his ability as an actor. When he thanked his wife he did it in a very sincere and loving way and I thought that was very nice. I thought the metaphor he used to describe how he felt in the moment was a good way to stray away from his emotions a little bit because you could tell that he was trying to fight his emotions throughout the speech. What he said at the end made his entire speech so grasping because he was so grateful and thankful to have received that award. The reference to the movie at the end of her speech I felt was a good way to close her speech. It gave credit to the movie she played in and gave a sense of her character in the movie which is what she received the award for. In the beginning of the speech she seemed a little cocky because of what she said. When she started thanking people I was annoyed of how much information she gave about their relationships. It was like she was telling her life stories with them and it was too much information. Aside from that the rest of her speech was very sincere and loving because of the emotion she had when she began to talk about the friendships she made and the experiences she’s had with making movies with different people.

In Snow in August, the main character sees a brutal beating by the local bully, and from then on he is forced to live in fear by never saying a word about what had happened. In The Client, almost the same conflict, the main character witnesses and is told valuable information from a lawyer, who mob ties, and commits suicide. With this he is also marked for death by the mobsters to ensure his silence. He repeated to shout â€Å"I won’t tell no one, please stop.† He would do anything to save his mother. Michael was never the same after that incident. He was in shock and would not leave his apartment building. He stopped meeting with the Rabbi, being an alter boy, and reading comic books. He was now extremely terrified and confused. He couldn’t trust anyone with the information he withheld. He decided to stay quiet and not to show his feelings. He was not joking or playing around anymore. This was a matter of life or death. In court he said â€Å" I plead the 5th,† which meant he wouldn’t tell the judge anything. There has been opposition to raise taxes on soft drinks and snack foods, but it is a good idea.There is evidence that these taxes can reduce the number of people who purchase these items.
